Tongans tend to see themselves as unique among Pacific islanders as they were never fully colonized and retain their monarchy. Respect for traditional values and institutions remains high. Tongans are strong church-goers; the Wesleyan, Roman Catholic and Mormon churches are influential and often fund education.
